Cruise Description

8 Night Cruise sailing from Sydney roundtrip aboard Pacific Explorer.

Discover this country of contrasts when you come away with us to two of New Caledonia's favourite ports.

From French cuisine and architecture in the cosmopolitan "Paris of the Pacific", to total relaxation in the Isle of Pines. Say 'bonjour' to an incredible place to holiday..

Highlights of this cruise:

Sydney
Sydney is home to two of the world’s most famous landmarks – the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, both perfectly situated on the magnificent harbour.

Noumea
All the flavour and ambience of a bustling, sophisticated provincial french town with the friendly charms, adventure and heavenly climate of the pacific islands.

Noumea is situated on Grande Terre, New Caledonia’s main island. In the late 1800’s Noumea had a strong frontier quality with adventurers, miners, government officials, traders, seafarers and convicts all calling the place home. Gradually, other ethnic groups added to the mix – Chinese, Vietnamese, American servicemen during World War II and settlers from a variety of Pacific Islands. Many came to seek their fortunes, particularly in the nickel and gold mines.

Mare
The best kept secret of all of New Caledonia’s islands, Maré is about as close to paradise as any will ever come.

Divided into eight districts, Maré has a truly untouched beauty. Jagged basalt rocks are evidence of the island’s first volcanic activity, dark forests stretch to the cliffs’ edges and its central plane is scattered with grottos and natural pools where fish and turtles abound. To explore this place is to journey into the most colourful of the Pacific Islands. Though shopping and dining options are scarce, Maré encapsulates what it truly means to get away from the everyday and relax while experiencing something new and inspiring. Its beaches are postcard worthy, its waters are perpetually warm and its vistas are unforgettable.

Isle of Pines
It’s easy to see why Isle of Pines is commonly referred to as the jewel of the pacific. Its beauty is simply breathtaking.

Captain James Cook was the first European to discover Isle of Pines in 1774 on his second voyage to New Zealand. He gave the island its name after seeing the tall native pines for which it is famous. Cook never set foot on the island, but noted it was inhabited because he saw smoke. The 1840’s saw the arrival of missionaries - Protestant then Catholic, as well as traders looking for precious sandalwood. In 1872 the island became a penal colony for 3000 French convicts. Today, nearly 140 years later, the island is less populated than previously and remains extremely protected by the tribal system.
